United Nations Foundation

The United Nations Foundation (UN Foundation) was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation builds and implements public-private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and also works to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. The UN Foundation is a public charity.

Since 2001, the UN Foundation has been working with the UN on malaria prevention, building innovative partnerships with multinational corporations, international agencies and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and malaria, among others. Specifically through its partnership with the Measles Initiative, the UN Foundation works with the American Red Cross, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, UNICEF and local country governments to combat malaria by distributing insecticide-treated bed nets as part of its measles vaccination campaigns in Africa.

In an effort to increase public awareness about malaria and leverage additional resources to prevent the disease, the UN Foundation and its founding partners created Nothing But Nets, a grassroots campaign to mobilize diverse constituencies, such as schools, universities, churches, sports teams, civic groups and individuals with a clear, simple call to action to help combat malaria in Africa. The UN Foundation coordinates the Nothing But Nets campaign and works directly with the Measles Initiative to purchase insecticide-treated bed nets, distribute them and explain their use.
